Labor Resolution in Support of Reproductive Rights

Resolution in Support of Reproductive Rights and Against the Right Wing

WHEREAS a woman’s control over her own body is a prerequisite to her rights as a worker; and

WHEREAS reproductive rights are a crucial issue for women of every color, age, background, sexuality, and immigrant status; and

WHEREAS the struggle for reproductive justice includes access to free, safe, legal abortion on demand; universal healthcare; paid maternity leave and the right to return to the same job with no loss of benefits or seniority; and affordable, quality childcare; and

WHEREAS the rights of working people are under attack by the religious and conservative right wing and our strength as working people is based on united defense of unionism; feminism; anti-racism; immigrant rights; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights; and

WHEREAS the feminist and trade union movements worked together to defeat the anti-choice Proposition 85 in this past November’s California state election; and

WHEREAS the opportunity to build and strengthen the coalition of labor, community, and women’s organizations continues with the organizing against the right wing and anti-abortion rights groups who have announced a third annual “Walk for Life—West Coast” in San Francisco on January 20, 2007, the anniversary of the passage of Roe v. Wade; and

WHEREAS in 2005 and 2006 efforts to bring together local and national community groups and activists to organize reproductive rights counter demonstrations to the “Walk for Life” were endorsed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; the San Francisco Labor Council; UAW, Local 2103; Executive Committee, UPTE-CWA 9119, Local 1; Labor Committee for Peace and Justice; ACCESS; East Bay NOW; Watsonville Brown Berets; California Coalition for Women Prisoners; Radical Women; Code Pink; Women of Color Resource Center; GABNet; the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and many more; and

WHEREAS the struggle for reproductive justice and against the right wing is in the interests of all oppressed people;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that [your union] endorse the call for a united, grassroots, multi-issue, diverse, peaceful “Forward, Not Back—Reproductive Justice for All!” demonstration along the “Walk for Life” march route in defense of reproductive rights and women’s health on January 20, 2007, and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that [your union] make a donation to help defray outreach and logistical costs associated with hosting the rally and demonstration; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that [your union] publicize the event and encourage its constituents to participate in the organizing and help build a strong labor presence at the pro-choice counter-demonstration.
